And there may be none more idiotic than Erasure

I liked the early eighties videos, like the ones Billy Joel shot to support Glass Houses.

Look like about a total operating budget of $500. Rent a garage, a camera, boom, got a video.

Those early "promotional clips" had a low-budget charm that disappeared pretty quick when the suits discovered video's ability to sell the music to the public. Isn't Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" video the one where things really started getting pretentious? I did always think those ZZ Top videos for Eliminator were pretty cool, though.

other favorites:

Talking Heads - "Once In A Lifetime"
Barnes & Barnes - "Fish Heads"
Bow Wow Wow - I Want Candy"
Devo - "Whip It"

I think the most amazing thing is that they were all directed by Michael Nesmith. That guy really gets around.

I was anxious to get my MTV and when it arrived I was not so excited. I don't remember how earlier on it was, maybe 1982. I felt that they distracted from the music too much and already they were being repeated often.

The only one I remember liking was A-Ha's Take On Me. Once in A Lifetime was more interesting to me as a song than a video, but I do recall him doing that chopping thing down his arm. Never heard of Barnes & Barnes, or that song. I Want Candy is still a song that I like but unless the video had that chick naked in it, I don't need to see it.

Davy Jones played tambourine on all of those tracks.

Billy Joel bitched early on that video was the tail wagging the dog ... then he played along with the rest [to a point].
