So I get to Red Eye about 8:40 and there's already a queue of about 20 people. The guy in front of me is carrying a Utopia (heavy metal shop) bag and says that they opened about 8:30 (they're just down the road). I decide to wait at Red Eye.

So the door opens and I get through the door, but have to wait on the middle of the stairs and the queue doesn't move. After about 5 or 10 minutes someone from the front of the queue eventually comes out and starts up the stairs and I notice that it's my mate Greg Eagle (Mr Sputnik).

I poke him in the chest as he's passing and say "I hope you haven't taken my single!" He goes into his bag and reveals that he has got a Starman. He also says that there was only 2 and that they've all gone.

"Bugger this" I say, "I'm off to Utopia." Greg joins me. He tells me that he's been outside Red Eye since 6am (in the dark and mist). Last year he got there at that time and was first in the queue. This year he was third.

When we get to Utopia Greg freaks because it's open. Last year it didn't open until 10. We get in and I get my Starman. Phew. Greg gets a spare and there's none left. Oh well, not my problem. Over the moon 'arry!

What's he doing there singing with Linda McCartney? I thought she couldn't sing.

What's significant about Starman other than the fact that it exists? I wasn't aware it was Record Store Day (although strangely, I was wondering about it yesterday). There aren't any participating stores within an hour of here, so I generally don't bother anyway. My main complaint is that it has been subverted into this music geekfest of limited singles. It's like waiting in line for Harry Potter or Star Wars 3D.

Most special things seem to be vinyl, which I gave up twenty years ago. As you've shown, you have to get in line at 6am. We're talking about music here...musicians (and club-hoppers) don't get up until two in the afternoon. Then there's the issue of limited availability. Some guy gets up early, grabs one or two of everything, and it's on eBay by noon. I'd prefer it if you were able to place an order on Record Store Day and have it ship a month later. or some other scheme that doesn't involve getting up early or paying scalpers.

It really doesn't seem to be about record stores at all. If nobody can get in until somebody leaves, then that guy inside isn't going to spend any time scoping out what's in the racks and deciding if he want's to shop there in the future instead of FYE. He probably came from sixty miles away and wants to get in and out so that he can hit another store up for specials. It should be Record Store Week, and the labels should offer special low bulk rates to the independents so they can offer awesome sales. My favorite times in record stores was when I found a new one and could spend four hours going through every single rack to see if there were any treasures.

Hey, it's Cranky Bastard! I can bitch all I want here, get off my case.

You're right. I went into Red Eye on Friday and asked if they were going to have the Bowie single and they said yes. I asked if I could lay-by it and they said no. So I get there twenty minutes before they open and they only had two. Still, I don't know about the other person, but my mate Greg is a hardcore Bowie fan and won't be selling his copy on ebay.

That's Mick Ronson BTW.

Boy is my face red.

I'm happy that some attention is given to record stores. Somehow walking out with $200 of CDs under my arm feels like a bigger conquest than grabbing twenty albums free on someone's blog.

Have Linda and Mr. Ronson ever been spotted in the same place at the same time?
