Am I the only one who thinks they're WAY too many award shows? Does anyone still watch those damn things? I can't remember the last time I saw one.

The only one I remembered was back in 1989, The Oscars, and that embarrassing opening when actor Rob Lowe sang a duet with Snow White.

Yes, the Disney character.

The song? "Proud Mary."

Think I'm kidding? See this for yourselves...the torture starts @4:49.

I don't watch The Emmys, The before mentioned Oscars, The Golden Globe Awards, The Grammy's, The Tony's and all the food chain variety of awards shows shove at us around this time.

Like Woody Allen once said "All they ever do out there is give away awards to each other."

You're probably correct but I wouldn't know as I hardly watch TV.

i will sometimes tune in if someone i like is performing. the grammys, i guess, are the big ones for music, but they are so out of touch with reality.

i remember a few years back when brian wilson finally brought smile to fruition. he was awarded best rock instrumental or some lame thing for mrs' o'leary's cow at the grammy's. the irony being that among an album of great, beautifully crafted songs, the weakest track of the bunch wins an award.

generally, award shows generate no excitement in my home.

I know what you mean. I rarely bother with awards shows nowadays, though you do get the occasional amusing presenters, like Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig at this year's Golden Globes, pretending to have seen all of the nominated movies in the category they're presenting. Hilarious!

For about what, half a century? Laughing

This is the same bunch that gave the Hard Rock/Metal Performance award to... Jethro Tull!

How about this one:
Quote:
The New Vaudeville Band beats basically anybody who mattered (1967): Given a choice of some of the greatest songs of the rock and roll era - The Beatles' Eleanor Rigby, Beach Boys' Good Vibrations, The Mamas & The Papas' Monday Monday, The Association's Cherish and Monkees' Last Train To Clarksville - the Grammy voters withered and gave the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Song to the New Vaudeville Band's novelty, '20s-style dance jingle Winchester Cathedral. A song literally nobody has ever heard since.

Some artists who have never won a Grammy: Led Zeppelin, the Who, Jimi Hendrix, the Beach Boys, Bob Marley, the Doors, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, Diana Ross, the Kinks, Queen...even Journey! You would think those guys would have gotten the token sellout award.

That example of Brian's token nomination is a good one. Long overdue but just for THAT???

I can't even remember the last musician I saw there.

Probably one of the most useless awards IHMO.

@aitoid:

Laughing Thanks for the clip. Unfortunately, it's few and very far in-between when something that humorous finds its way on there. All of those kind of shows actually. The humor/comedy bits almost always goes stale the moment it leaves their lips. It seems forced. You would think with the high caliber actors & their acting skills, they can fake humor.

I'm there now. I'm nearly only on the net nowadays. It's unbelievable crap on the airwaves now.

How is it on your end? (You too aitoid.)

I've always watched a lot of TV and it wasn't easy to see good TV when I first came to Australia 21 years ago as the commercial channels were completely crap (outrageous amounts of advertising - more than the US*) and the public channels were underfunded.

Then we got cable about 15 years ago and things improved. Get to see a few good music shows on Studio, our arts channel, live sports from Aus, UK, Europe and US (mainly different kinds of football), a few good comedy shows and great dramas like Dexter, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Justified (my fave) etc. The best thing is that because they get most of their money from subscriptions the cable channels have either a normal amount of or no advertising.

*In the 80s all three commercial networks were sold for much more than they were worth. The new owners had to go to the government and beg to be allowed more advertising time (which presumably was regulated) so they could get more revenue. So whereas the UK had 5-6 minutes an hour and the US had 10-12 minutes an hour, we had to put up with 15-16 minutes an hour of really bad quality advertising. It made TV unwatchable. The commercial channels are not much better now. They'll buy new shows and play them, but if they don't rate they'll either move them to the middle of the night or drop them altogether and everything takes a back seat to sport.

Very Interesting.....I'm always surprised of the amount of shows we export overseas. I don't know if I should be proud or worried. Obviously the latter I suppose. Rolling Eyes Laughing

I guess because I live out here in California, where you can on rare occasions literately run into a so-called "celebrity", The whole kiss-ass sub-culture of show business really gets to me. I really don't give one damn at all on the wealth status of a person--It's not my business how much someone makes or what they want to do with it--but it's the smugness and the "Do as I say, Not as I do" mentality that I can't stand.

Those awards shows just seems petty to me after awhile; Does anyone really remember any of the 'winners' months after the event(s)?

Just seems self indulgent in a world getting harder to survive in....
